10 Most Common Dog Poisons Around Your House

10 Most Common Dog Poisons Around Your House - SpoiledDogDesigns.com

There are lots of things around our houses that we don’t think about as being a danger to our pets, after all they help us get through our daily lives more comfortably. Many of them are so commonplace that we don’t think much about them laying around….until the dog eats them and gets poisoned.

Here’s a list of the 10 most common dog toxicity calls vets received in 2011:

(This information was published by VPI Pet Insurance.)

  1. Foods such as chocolate, raisins/grapes, xylitol (an artificial sweetener in chewing gum, kids vitamins, etc)
  2. Insecticides, such as sprays, bait stations, spot-on flea and tick treatments
  3. Mouse and Rat Poisons
  4. Human NSAIDS – like Aleve, Motrin
  5. Household cleaners
  6. Antidepressants, such as Prozac, Paxil, Celexa and Effexor.
  7. Fertilizers, such as Bone Meal, Blood Meal and iron-based products
  8. Acetaminophen, such as Tylenol and cough/cold medications
  9. Amphetamines, such as ADD/ADHD drugs like Adderall and Concerta
  10. Veterinary pain relievers, specifically COX-2 inhibitors such as Rimadyl, Deramaxx, and Previcox.

Now you probably are wondering how a veterinary medicine could be toxic. It goes back to my earlier blog story about Bella eating Mom’s Pill. It was the strength of the dose that was toxic.

Lets keep our fur-baby’s safe.

Thanks for reading.
